The Emerald Cup 2019 Recap & Winners
The 16th annual Emerald Cup concluded today in Northern California
With possible rain in the forward weather outlook only a week prior, sun shined on Northern California throughout the weekend as thousands flocked (an estimated 30,000 were in attendance) to the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in beautiful Santa Rosa California for the 16th annual Emerald Cup. Known as the largest and most respected outdoor cannabis competition in the world, The Emerald Cup featured a weekend full of speakers such as Cat Packer, music from acts such as Steel Pulse, and of course some of the best outdoor cannabis in the Californian market.
Guild Extracts President Mike Clemmons, said he enjoyed this year. “The Emerald Cup this year was fantastic.” When asked about the switch in POS systems, which ran on Meadow this year, he said, “It’s been great. The Meadow team was really helpful with the on-boarding.”
California, which is the largest adult-use market in the world, has had a rocky start to its regulated market since coming online January 1st. “Right now they (regulators) are in the process of wiping out two-thirds of all the companies,” Emerald Cup founder Tim Blake told The Press Democrat. “The demand is here.”
Despite California companies such as Flow Kana having announced layoffs from regulatory constrictions, the mood was hardly dampened on the show floor with Flow Kana’s village having a continual stream of people visiting everything from their retail setup, to their lounge, to even their Farmers Relations booth where they worked with farmers to discuss the issues they are having in the industry.
Longtime cannabis advocate Tommy Chong was honored at the awards ceremony with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Tommy was the first recipient to receive the honor since Willie Nelson debuted as the inaugural winner at last years Emerald Cup.
Chong, who was famously arrested during Operation Pipe Dreams back in 2013 for financing his son’s glass company, Chong Glass Works, was humble in his interpretation of his celebrity. “I wouldn’t be me without you (all). You made me.” He also reflected over his life and if he thought he would still be around to see legalization. “People ask me if you ever thought this day would come. I never thought about it because I never thought that far ahead.”
