Nashville Hemp Businesses Brace For Impact As State THCA Restrictions Take Effect July 1

Hemp products will now be moved under the oversight of the TABC

A major change is coming to Tennessee’s hemp industry on July 1, and some business owners say they are preparing for an uncertain future.

Under the state’s new rules, hemp-derived cannabinoid products will move under the oversight of the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission. The changes include new licensing and regulations, but one of the biggest impacts for businesses is the restriction of THCA products.

THCA is a cannabinoid found in raw cannabis plants that can convert into intoxicating THC when heated.

Supporters of the change argue the new rules close a loophole that allowed intoxicating products similar to marijuana to be sold in Tennessee despite the state not having a recreational marijuana program. They also point to concerns over product safety, youth access and challenges for law enforcement.

However, some hemp business owners say the change goes too far.
