Mobile Alabama Hemp Shop Owners Get 90-Day Window To Resume Sales Under New City Restriction

City approval and state license required before businesses can legally sell hemp products

Hemp shop owners in Mobile have a narrow window to get back in business after the city passed a resolution outlining how retailers can legally sell consumable hemp products.

No business in Mobile has yet received City Council approval, leaving retail sales essentially prohibited in the city and leaving several business owners without a clear path forward for their livelihoods.

What the resolution requires

Under the resolution, businesses must first receive location approval from the Mobile City Council, then obtain a state hemp retailer license from the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board before selling in the city.

The city is allowing a 90-day transitional period, but only for businesses that were already selling hemp products before Jan. 1, 2026, and only if they submit a complete application to the ABC Board, keep proof of that application on-site, and follow all city rules.
