New Tennessee Law raises Age To Purchase Tobacco

The legislation has caused impact with products popular with younger customers

The start of the new year doesn’t just bring a change to the calendar…but new laws and resolutions.

Starting January 1st, Tennesseans must now be 21 or older to purchase tobacco products and cigarettes. This brings the state into compliance with a federal law passed in December, 2019–which also raised the minimum age to buy tobacco products to 21.

Although this new state law just went into effect January 1st, some Chattanooga smoke shops actually started enforcing the new age requirement months ago. Some wanted to give themselves and their customers time to get acclimated, while others had some confusion about when the law officially went into effect.
