New Jersey Delays Vote, Makes Amendments, And Has Yet To Release The Amended Bill To The Public
Whatever bill comes forward is expected to pass on March 25th
If the bill to legalize marijuana in New Jersey is cleared by two committees today, it could set up the Garden State as the 11th state to legalize weed for adult-use as soon as next week.
Committee hearings on the landmark legislation to legalize, tax and regulate marijuana were scheduled for early Monday afternoon but have been delayed for several hours as lawmakers make last-minute amendments.
The Assembly Appropriations Committee cleared over 40 bills earlier in the day before taking a recess at 3:15 p.m.
The committee didn’t reconvene until 6:05 p.m., nearly three hours later.
One of those changes would allow those currently incarcerated — including those in prison, on parole or probation or enrolled in diversionary programs — on marijuana-related crimes to “seek relief so they can petition to get their sentences either vacated or dismissed in some expedited fashion,” Amol Sinha, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, said in an interview Monday.
