Tennessee Set To Become Seventh State To Have Full Ban On Kratom
The ban affects both synthetic and natural forms of the substance
Tennessee is set to become the seventh state in the U.S. to have a full ban on kratom, a substance that has stimulant and opioid effects.
Products readily sold in the Chattanooga area containing kratom in drink, powder, pill and gummy form are set to become illegal starting in July after a successful push by Hamilton County lawmakers.
State Rep. Esther Helton-Haynes, R-East Ridge, introduced a bill in the House and recruited Sen. Todd Gardenhire, R-Chattanooga, to file a corresponding version in the Senate to ban both synthetic and natural forms of the substance.
While synthetic kratom was already illegal, differentiation between the two forms is not easy, making enforcement of the ban on synthetic kratom more complicated and uncommon. That’s why Helton-Haynes said a full ban is long overdue.
