Iowa Bill Would Classify hemp As Agricultural Commodity, Restrict Some Products

The bill would also separate naturally grown hemp from chemically altered products

A bill moving through the Iowa legislature could change how hemp products are regulated across the state.

House Study Bill 753 would classify hemp as an agricultural commodity, which could give farmers clearer legal protection to grow, transport and sell their crops.

The bill would also separate naturally grown hemp from chemically altered products often manufactured in labs. It would cap THC levels in hemp edibles and ban inhalable hemp products, including smokable flower and vapes.

Under current state law, consumable hemp products are restricted to no more than 0.3% THC. Farmers must also be licensed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to legally sell products.
