Wisconsin Representative Introduces Bill To Raise Legal Age For Tobacco Use

It’s a growing trend across the resume

State Rep. Melissa Sargent is co-sponsoring a bill to raise the legal age for tobacco use to 21 in the state of Wisconsin.

Sargent says only 10% of smokers start at the age of 21 or older and less than 1% start after the age of 26. Her hope is that the new legislation would reduce the rate of selling, possessing and purchasing nicotine and tobacco products such as e-cigarettes and vaping products.

“With popular brands like JUUL using flavors, colors and sleek branding to target young people, it is important now more than ever for our state to work towards reducing the lifelong, and oftentimes life-ending, impacts of nicotine use by impressionable youth,” said Sargent.
