Vermonters Must Be 21 To Buy Tobacco, Starting September 1

Teenagers in Vermont will no longer be able to purchase tobacco starting Sept 1. Vermonters will have to be at least 21 to grab a pack of cigarettes in the state.
This change is a long time coming for some Vermont legislators, who worked to passsimilar laws for a few years. It will be “illegal to sell or furnish tobacco products, tobacco paraphernalia, or tobacco substitutes to any person under 21 years of age,” according to a press release from the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery.
The new law will align Vermont with other “Tobacco 21” states, including:
- Arkansas.
- California.
- Delaware.
- Hawaii.
- Illinois.
- Maine.
- Maryland.
- Massachusetts.
- New Jersey.
- Oregon.
- Utah.
- Virginia.
- Washington.
The Senate bill (S. 86), sponsored by legislators like Sen. Deborah Ingram and Sen.Virginia Lyons, was signed into law by Gov. Phil Scott in May. Tobacco 21 will be effective starting Sept. 1.
