Hemp farmers have wrestled with whether to keep planting
The website for the U.S. Hemp Roundtable displays a countdown clock, showing how many days are left until a “hemp ban” goes into effect in November.
Last fall, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., led the passage of legislation closing a legal loophole that allowed for the sale of unregulated intoxicating hemp-derived products.
The change was meant to root out “bad actors,” McConnell said.
Hemp businesses say the restriction on the psychoactive compound THC to 0.4 milligrams per container would effectively wipe out most of the products they sell, like gummies and drinks.
Hemp farmers have wrestled with whether to keep planting.
Now, the hemp industry is celebrating after the White House called on Congress to roll back the clampdown.
A supplemental funding request from the Office of Management and Budget to House Speaker Mike Johnson, states “the Administration requests additional authorities that it strongly supports. These authorities include revising the Federal regulation of hemp to ensure the fair treatment of hemp products…”
The letter goes on to say that at a minimum, Congress should delay implementing the change led by McConnell.
