Lawmakers Debating Bill That Would Ban Kratom In North Dakota

North Dakota lawmakers debated House Bill 1101 on Monday
An herbal substance sold throughout North Dakota is getting attention from lawmakers this legislative session.
House Bill 1101 was introduced on Monday by Representative Jeremy Olson, from Arnegar.
The bill would list the herbal substance known as Kratom, alongside fentanyl, as a Schedule 1 substance.
The substance, which is commonly used for pain relief, provides users with opioid-like stimulant effects, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
However, the substance and its derivatives have not been approved by the FDA.
Senior fellow on Public Policy at the American Kratom Association, Mac Haddow, says he worries that if the legislation passes, it could potentially create a black market, raising safety concerns for users.
